^Homemade compass. D. showed interest in north/south/east/west
  last nite, so we made a homemade compass. We talked about
  north+south poles - santa + superman live THAT way, and the
  penguins live the other way. His eyes lit up when I said "the
  earth is a giant magnet, that why this works" - he "gets it".
  Smart kid. The info we just "know" as adults came from somewhere
  and its a privilege to be a small part of building new
  knowledge. Learning + play go hand in hand.^
