My favorite one for a cold I tripped over by experimenting: Raw
  clove of garlic followed by some kind of source of vitamin C. It
  can be tomato, orange juice, VitC chewable, ,whatever. I was
  experimenting in "food opposites" and VitC got rid of the garlic
  burn [which I happen to like but 'its for science!" but I ALSO
  noticed my little cold seemed to go away. Had a few people tried
  it. Had similar effects to Zinc (which makes sense, 'cause Zinc
  and VitC use similar molecular areas). You get the symptoms but
  they're lighter and faster. It's like fast-forward on the cold
  and you can hardly notice it. I don't get colds very often at
  all. But I take Zinc a few times a week, just regular dosage.
  But anyway, the raw garlic + vitC works. There's something about
  that enzyme that gets released JUST as you bite into a fresh
  clove that's not present in preserved garlic.
