Ok, the metaphor is a critical puzzle piece then as it doesn't
work as a statement without it. Our brains form analogies to
learn. We know what we know, however that is, at whatever point
were at. New knowledge or experience comes in. How do we bring
it "inside" as it were? We analogize to existing concepts. This
is most similar to that. It happens automatically. When there is
confusion we have other systems that can work such as deduction
and the like. But our primarily knowledge acquisition is via
  analogy.
