I believe the solution to education is through escapism. Pokemon
stats and combinations and minecraft constructions taught my
nephew more about math than his classes have. (he's in 5th grade
now). For me, getting a computer and teaching myself BASIC in
the early 1980s taught me more about math than school did. I'd
write little algorithms in my head in BASIC code as the strange
scribbles showed up on the board, just as my nephew translated
the way they teach math into Pokemon stats and fighting
combinations in HIS head.
