  definitely seems like a character. Strikes me as the result of
  coming from a fundamentalist (in this case, Zionist) background
  and rejecting it as a young adult and turning as far away from
  his father's footsteps as possible. Fundy Christians become New
  Atheist, as a teenager I'd see Roman Catholic girls become
  Wiccan... same type of thing. Turning away from the roots to
  embrace a directly oppositional opinion. This doesn't invalidate
  his opinions and such by any means, just an observation of a
  pattern.
