Look at that picture: Many of those scientists were pretty much
has-beens in science by that point. Their heydey was a decade or
two beforehand and now they're available for photos and
newspaper interviews. Some of them were current at the time -
quite a few. But some were more-or-less old-guard, influential
politically and inspirationally but scientifically not as much
by then.
