Ah-ha! FOUND IT! The birth of the Renaissance is thanks to:
Gemistus Pletho and the otherwise failed Council of Florence
(1431-1449) [1]

Thanks Gemistus Pletho!
== It's been driving me nuts on and off for years. The history I
learned and I *still* keep hearing is that "there were Dark Ages
then Middle Ages then a revival of lost knowledge which led to
rationalism to science and then to today". It's of course a very
narrow view, cutting out important connections. As an adult, I
learned about the Byzantine Empire and that all that knowledge
was certainly not lost, just active elsewhere. I knew there had
to be SOMEBODY who really brought the attention of this stuff
back to Europe and suspected it had something to do with
attempts at reconciliation between East and West churches but I
couldn't put my finger on it. Now I can. [2]#yay smile emoticon
