My view of good science is that it's an extension of common
sense and can go off track if it tries to be a full replacement
for common sense - after all someone trained in physics will
naturally see everything from a limited physics viewpoint.
Someone who is mathematical will see everything from a
mathematical perspective etc. That's why I take grand everything
theories with a big dose of skepticism. I first ask "what's
their limiting perspective?" And it's helpful. Doesn't take away
from good stuff they have to say but it provides a context from
within which to view their work.
