I've found both Zen monk stories and "Sayings of the Desert
Fathers" (when I was in Eastern Orthodoxy) to be very useful
stuff. The Sayings of the Desert Fathers was compiled between
the 4th and 6th centuries AD, originally in Coptic but widely
translated through the centuries. Took until 1975 to make it
into English but I was 3 then so in plenty of time for me.
Anyway, they were of a similar format. Usually it's "A man goes
up to Abba [x] and asks..." then the lesson. Usually some
demonstration or some useful answer that makes you go, "Oh!!!"
Same idea and same kinds of tales. All good stuff.
