I believe there are regulations in most countries regarding
truth-in-advertising for medical cures. Fly-by-nights come and
go all of the time. A recent case was a guy in Australia selling
a detox that had bleach in it. REALLY bad stuff. In jail now.
Stuff's banned. Is it Deepak's fault? I don't think so. Magical
thinking isn't limited to New Age / Alt.med situations. Look at
Scientism. Science has all the answers. You got people believing
that. GREAT! Everything's fine right? Nope. Market your product
so it _sounds_ Scientific-enough, say magic words like Peer
Reviewed, University Studies show... and toss in some statistics
- ALL things that people readily believe - because we're taught
early to Trust Science (tm) and then what happens? It's
dangerous to give any one group Absolute Authority. Skepticism,
to me, is necessary. If you like Logic, great! But be skeptical
of it at the same time. If you like Science (I do), great! But
be skeptical at the same time. Bullshit is everywhere. Certainty
is dangerous. Uncertainty keeps us open to questions,
challenges. If you believe The Scientific Method fixes
everything and ignore the realities of politics within the
sciences, then you're just as suspectable to manipulation as
anybody believing in a miracle foot detox product.
