Well, basically Hawking said that there's no event Horizon.
  Information can and does escape - nothing is lost. Traditional
  Black Holes don't exist. They were some mathematical fun for a
  few decades but reality doesn't match up to the math.

  emoticon   Means there's been far more science fiction (based on
  math) about them than science fact. Science fact is getting
  better at it.
