Well, it's basic message is that: Life sucks, life always
  sucked. Life will always suck and that's just how it is but in a
  wry sort of way, 'but it's ok I suppose". It didn't treat the
  viewer like a total idiot.

  Diary of a wimpy kid serves a similar function for kids of GenZ
  (I think this show would be a late GenY show).
