banking them is a good idea. I currently have the tomatoes
planted about 3 ft apart in a 20' x 8' middle of the garden. I
hilled up the dirt (opposite of banking) and have black plastic
over the whole thing (for warmth). The thick plastic cover plus
the spotlight underneath seems to have kept the tomato plants
alive. If the soil warms up later today, I'll give them another
nice watering and a weak fertilizer to help them overcome any
  cold shock. "
