It's one of those scripts we all inherit and roleplay at some
  point.
  But when a relationship matures and one or the other gets tired
  of the script, that's when apologies are ineffective because by
  that point, theoretically, the "something stupid" could have
  been eliminated in the first place by either side and when it
  doesn't... and the script is invalid (as are the flowers /
  chocolates / apologies / etc), it's usually counseling time. The
  counselor gives them new scripts to read from. Depending on how
  much they believe the counselor and the new scripts, it may
  prove successful or unsuccessful.
