Well, this is Mike Rowe. He's been on a quest to legitimize the
"dirty jobs" (he's the dirty jobs guy) to try and counteract
what we're always taught:
Get a degree and your life will be on track once you get it.
People who do labor jobs are often looked down upon by people
who are educated and he's been trying to give them the credit
they deserve and say, Hey look, instead of complaining about the
1% who have what you DON'T have, why not see what you can do
with what you have?
He's not anti-dreamer or even anti-complainer or anti-rally, but
rather he's saying "don't look down at the hard workers - in
fact, you can even consider joining them".
I don't know if I could do it myself. Could I dig a ditch? I've
dug post holes here at the house. Dug ditches for my garden in
the past. My job as a teenager was a custodian. Washed dishes
for a short time in college but I made sure I got into the
computer lab asap.
Yet, even when I worked at a print shop I refused to learn how
to operate the printing presses. I worked the Computer. I was
above the printing presses.
I absorbed exactly the attitude he's talking about.
The thing that impressed me is that he had a microphone shoved
into his face, and he was ready with something to say. Could I
be the eloquent so quickly, whatever my opinion? I don't think I
could.
