I stuttered when I was young. My brain worked well enough but my
  vocal chords and tongue didn't work fast enough. I'd get stuck.

  I learned when I was 8 years old to "delay" my word production
  by just a moment. So there's always a slight conscious gap
  between thinking and speaking for me.

  It's shown itself to be useful in other ways (self-awareness in
  general) but it has also made me conscious of the entire process
  of language production as I live it daily. I rarely get to just
  "speak" because I STILL have to have a conscious lag in order to
  speak without stuttering, even though the lag time isn't
  perceptible outside of my own head.
