Welcome to my brain. I always start from here, and zoom
backwards whenever somebody mentions something historical and I
get a 'feeling' for the time. Works in the other direction too.

And for me, I _hate_ the missing pieces. Our education in
history needs drastic improvement and most historical materials
out there are VERY biased, 1/2 of it is crap - the ignorance of
the authors and modern biases sticking out worse than some
situation where body parts a person is trying to hide is/are
  sticking out...

We're taught history in a 'jumping around' fashion, usually all
to support some kind of conclusion, COMPLETELY ignoring context,
the surrounding cultures, the 'feel' of the times, and in the
process, INSERTING their own biases, usually involving people
long ago stupid, we smart.... except for that ONE VISIONARY WHO
SAW THE FUTURE/SAW THE TRUTH AMIDST ALL THE SURROUNDING
IGNORANCE...... ugh. such an old script.
