I believe we name things so we can distinguish between
INTENTIONS.
A lemon is a lemon because our intentions are to use it for
lemony things.
A blade is a blade because it does blade-y things.
Yes, it's circular.
What encompasses a lemon? It's lemonness.
What encompasses a blade? It's bladeness.
What are the characteristics of lemonness? lemonness produces an
effect on our tongue. We can call it sourness.
Does sourness exist without the lemon? if there was no other
fruit then sourness would be lemonness. But then, there are
other SIMILAR things that produce SIMILAR effects. So, sourness
can be abstracted from the lemon and the lemonness and now apply
to something else.
So, something can have lemon-y qualities without being a lemon.
Does the quality of bladeness include sharpness? Does the
quality of bladeness include cut-ness? It does.
Does that mean all blades cut? No.
The ideal of blade does. But something can resemble a blade
while not having full blade-like qualities (such as sharpness)
and we still call it a blade, even if it is dull.
