Yeah. I mean I saw aspects of it in Eastern Orthodoxy but it was
  uncommon, NEVER saw it in the Methodist church (or the Quaker,
  Unitarian Universalist and Episcopals inbetween)...

  ...but my main exposure to the concept of a vengeful God has
  been via anti-theists online over the past 27 years or so. [not
  necessarily atheist, as I know anti-theists who are into New Age
  stuff instead for example)

  So, I was lucky I think.   Like, the whole heaven and hell thing
  when I was doing the Orthodoxy thing can be summed up like this:

  and in the monastic writings (which were my main focus while I
  was in it), all the stuff about demons and such were clearly
  psychological, symbolic, allegorical, metaphorical. Direct
  translations of 5th/6th century monastic texts (like in the
  Philokalia) read almost like modern day self-help books.
