My brother wanted a Gi Joe when he was little. It was the first
  action figure - the first doll for boys. This was probably
  around 1965. They didn't get it for him the first year; family
  pressures. He still wanted it in 1966. So, they got it for him.
  He loved it. Other family members shook their heads and said
  things. its not that they were progressive on principle... but
  it was available, he wanted it, and it seemed kinda wrong NOT to
  get it.

  This is before I was around. [I was born the year that book was
  published], but I heard the story enough times from my mother.
  It amazes me in 2015 that the same old fashioned beliefs that
  other family members pressured them about as young parents STILL
  exists.
