My brother wanted a Gi Joe when he was little. It was the first
action figure - the first doll for boys. This was probably
around 1965. They didn't get it for him the first year; family
pressures. He still wanted it in 1966. So, they got it for him.
He loved it. Other family members shook their heads and said
things. its not that they were progressive on principle... but
it was available, he wanted it, and it seemed kinda wrong NOT to
get it.
This is before I was around. [I was born the year that book was
published], but I heard the story enough times from my mother.
It amazes me in 2015 that the same old fashioned beliefs that
other family members pressured them about as young parents STILL
exists.
