Ah yes, I remember that. I was lucky. While my 4th grade teacher
stuck to the construction paper Thanksgiving and Columbus Day, I
had a 5th grade teacher that was more progressive and said,
"Forget what the textbook says", and brought her OWN materials
in, and went over Portugal, Spain, and a little about medieval
commerce. She was good. Columbus wasn't portrayed as an
"anti-hero" but rather, just a little less special. She also
went over Lief Erikson a bit more. Some of the Italian-American
members of the class were not happy with her.

Then 6th grade my History book had cavemen with blond hair and
clean shaven faces and pale white skin. I showed her, laughing
  at it.

My mother wrote a letter to the Board of Education to complain.
t's not that we were devoid of African studies; but it was hit
  or miss 'til Senior year.
