I've noticed Windows after XP had a strange bug where sometimes
  you'd have disabled sound devices.* The bug went unchecked
  through a few Windows versions - might be in the current one as
  well. Go to wherever they're hiding the Sound Devices, right
  click and see if you can do a "Show all Disabled Devices" and
  see if something pops up that looks usable.* Solved a similar
  problem on my Toshiba Laptop running Win7, and it helped out a
  Desktop running Vista a while back... and a desktop running
  Win8... might have carried through to 10 as well.
