The fictionalization of history would be laughable in its overt
pandering and intentional errors but this one runs deep for many
people. I suspect I 'get' his theory: The LGBQTIQ communities
are each likely aware of their own histories.* The movie isn't
for these communities. It is for the stereotypically
movie-average American, which is a midwestern guy/gal with
standard looks, standard confusion, standard issues. The
audience?* what's perceived as "General Public". The goal?*
Greater acceptance of the general concept by large numbers of
people. The corrections to the history will be given - FOR FREE
  - by those offended by the inaccuracies of the movie and will
spread virally over the internet, providing free promotion of
the film. That's the theory, I believe. But my personal
opinion?* It's a shit theory. I'm a cis white male.* YMMV.
