Is a picture worth a thousand words?
  No.

A picture is an image that falls on the retina and projects into
  the brain.

A thousand words are read and utilize whatever ways it is that
we read and comprehend the concepts within.

Worth? That's economics. You can trade a thousand words for a
picture, or a picture for a thousand words.

It's metaphors. They're metaphors that lead you to a desired
conclusion by connecting concepts from different spheres of
knowledge together. The strength comes from fields unrelated to
  the concept being expressed.

They're tricky to spot because they're so common, but once you
see them, it's a new layer of knowledge.

Of course knowledge doesn't come in layers. Nor does it "come"
  anywhere. It doesn't move.
