I have great hope for the near future.
I look forward to a day where:
a) Internet is simply "there". An analogy would be GPS. GPS is
run by the US Government. Yet do they restrict it from their
'enemies'? No. Anybody in the world can use the GPS system.
No charge.
b) Similar to the Minitel effort in France in the 1980s, every
person gets some sort of Internet device. Tablet would be
enough. Made available for all, regardless of income.
There is already free phone programs for battered women and
children programs. Recycled Internet-capable devices aren't much
different.
c) Complete coverage.
So I'm glad for efforts being done by Google and even Facebook.
I criticize Facebook's internet org project somewhat of course.
They're bringing Internet to far off areas with free devices...
_but_ the free devices are limited to Facebook and a handpicked
set of sites, called "Internet".
So, it's misleading.
At the same time, at least it's _something_ - and for that, I'm
glad they're doing it.
