The indian reservation system has an interesting history. It was
originally a very progressive movement. At the time, the popular
thing was, "just be like us and you'll be ok" - much like today.
But then, academic progressives believed in the "noble savage
myth" and thought that culture/tradition would be best preserved
(along with some giving back of land, and that part at least
*was* the right thing to do) by Reservations.
But... yeah. Nice on paper. In practice? Govt supplied spam and
velveeta cheese along with locally acquired alcohol to dull the
misery was the reality for many native americans for many
generations; a "nice on paper" idea that was not so nice in
reality. Being native American on a reservation = future
diabetic. Thankfully that's finally improved.
