To me it's glass empty/full. Humans compress the Universe into
  patterns. Whether we prefer patterns of similarity or patterns
  of difference is our choice - or perhaps depends on our
  temperament. The patterns we "discover" are for human use and
  for the machines we make. That the patterns seem to work well
  with material objects is a nice bonus, imo.
