The fundamental task of a proper educator is to recognize genius
and in nurturing genius, along with filling in regular gaps in
generalized knowledge, social knowledge and occupational
therapy. [learning 'how to' - like how to math, how to language
  etc]

If they are not doing so, I do not consider them proper
  educators.

Much of present education is focused on norms - perhaps all of
  it.

I believe strongly that does a disservice to human capital, both
for the society they find themselves within, and especially for
themselves. Many a smart-kid commits crimes out of boredom.
Education which recognizes and nurtures individual genius at
acceptable and appropriate levels would keep that from
happening. Acceptable and appropriate means a relationship
between educator and student where communication is a two-way
street and not "project --> absorb --> regurgitate".

Wait: that's wrong. Not a two-way street. A neighborhood of
interconnected two-way streets. Norms of surrounding
culture/society *does* matter; just to me, not as much as the
individual. But that is because I am an individualist.
