There's nothing particularly magical about science. it's a nice
  methodology occasionally used by humans who are just as flawed
  as the rest of us. Positioning for power, power hungry,
  desperate to be published or seen, etc. Such things happen
  everywhere you go in some form.

  I love Sagan - he's my personal hero in many ways. But you have
  to remember - he was a spokesperson for promoting science. He
  wasn't _really_ anti religion per se - he wasn't atheist but
  agnostic - but against the excesses, just as he was against the
  excesses in politics and science.

  In short, WHEN the system works, it _can_ work well. So can any
  system - IN THEORY. In practice? Eh, hit or miss, hope for the
  best, try to get a lot of people rooting for you.
