Yes, and unfortunately the public image of modern science (by
  modern I speak of this current popular spokespeople for
  science): They don't do history very well at all.

  You can learn a lot about society's attitudes by looking at
  comedy. I don't have any ready examples, but I've seen a few
  skits/parodies that show theoretical physicists in particular
  (the poster children of "Science" for much of the public) as
  mixing up the Crusades, with no concept of ANYTHING of
  historical value happening post Ancient Greece until Galileo
  came along and got burned at the stake (what!?)... etc.

  Unfortunately, when I saw Hawking get up there and try to prove
  God-need-not-exist, I realized he fell into the fad himself. Oh
  well. I suppose the man has a right to his opinion, but basic
  theology is not his strong point smile emoticon
