Thanks for tagging me on this. I've often wondered if a lot of
  the brain's functioning is hard to measure because it's due to
  cross-talk rather than circuits from perfect connections and the
  brain-folding like a wad of paper makes sense in that context.
  Then again, so does the "spillage" of squirting chemicals as the
  water sloshes back and forth like an engine cleaner. [that's my
  favorite analogy - it took me a long time to find an analogy to
  the sinus pulse of water going back and forth in the head until
  I found saw a video of an engine parts cleaner... and thought,
  "THAT'S IT!". So, while I don't think they'll be fully
  successful at finding a purely mathematical model that works as
  nicely as algorithms for trees (which themselves only seem to
  work because they *resemble* trees to our sensibilities... I'd
  like to see some measurements) - I like the path they're taking
