The "build a web browser" project actually suits something I've
been working on. I'll have to poke through the course materials
and see if there's something I can use in there. I knew about a
few of these MOOCs but not all of them; I love internet archive
for not-losing these source materials.
Among the kids, homeschooling and magnet schools and the like
have made TREMENDOUS strides and kids are learning to work the
system. Fake ADHD effectively, get yourself thrown out of school
and you get to go to a state-paid alternative school. I know of
three young teenagers that did just that (from when I had a
minecraft server) [I didn't encourage them - they told me!] and
I couldn't be more proud.
They divorced themselves from public school. Even their parents
don't know they planned and executed it. They're still doing
school, still learning, but it's at their own pace. They also
get more time on standardized testing, which allows for extreme
leeway in cases of ADHD and such. But I'm a social anarchist at
heart, so it's exactly the kind of thing I'd like.
