Yes, the part of I was missing is that it was appealing to my
pragmatic upbringing. [not in a strict Philosophical sense -
but, for example, my mother refers to herself as a pragmatist
(lower case p) and influenced me enough that the little 8th
grade paper that got me into a private high school from the
dredges of the public school I was in was a paper I wrote called
"The Power of Making Do". I gave many examples of how making do
is useful, that it's ok "if it works and you know it works and
you can't figure out the details, you can still do it anyway",
and credited my mother heavily in it, which was bold for age 14
as by then, I was supposed to be "all about friends" and I knew
it - but I really wanted to get in this school. I won the full
  scholarship and I did.

So, at least pragmatism (lowercase p) gets boys from single
mother households into exclusive rich-kid schools at least one
  time in the USA.

  So, yeah.

It's a hard bias to shake off, that (p)ragmatism. In a sense, it
made me a combined total of $50,000 or so by end of high school
by paying for the single full scholarship slot they had.for that
  year.

Ok. Gotta shake off Fine. Thank you- very tempting he was
  indeed.

now I have to look up WHO paid for that schooling.
