I had a similar idea once but too lazy to pursue:

  I wanted to make a game that looked realistic, but with a press
  of a button, you could see "what lies beneath" - at ifrst
  wireframe or rendered as transparent with only light refractions
  as distinguishing parts, and then another button which shows
  nice labels, and the whole "what's underneath" would be rendered
  in wireframe vectors - like SVG..

  Then... you can ZOOOM at will, with deeper and deeper matrices
  showing, more labels available. I was thinking of it like an
  education tool but it would be built INTO whatever came it was.

  More like a "peek beneath reality to see structure" engine.
