Our cognitive systems compress and simplify.
Our brains are just too small to take in all the uniqueness of
all that's around us all at once.
We see "two apples" even though they're clearly not the same at
all.
But we must. Even if we measure using tools that don't initially
require compression of uniqueness into 'patterns', for us to
INTERPRET it, we must.
We can do it very carefully and more and more carefully and even
more and carefully. The map becomes our territory and all we see
is the pattens and toss out the things that don't fit as
anomalies.
Oh well. At least continual awareness of human limitation, both
in the particular and the general, leads to a sense of humility
and awe and that alone can lead to a better planet in general.
