It was for humor and to prove a point.* He spent the whole show
being sarcastic and then at the end goes, "This is bullshit!"
Well, SOMEBODY who really means it is going to take what he says
out of context and quote him on it, believing it's legitimate. I
quoted him out of context to remind people to watch out with
"saying the opposite of what you really mean" because someone
will quote you on it and then you'll have to waste time
defending your sarcasm. In short, don't defend Science with
Sarcasm.* Defend it with what it is.* It can stand by itself
just fine. EXAMPLE: Notice how I made a joke. It was
misunderstood. I had to take time explaining myself. Now, I'm
just a 43 yr old guy sitting behind his laptop, talking on a
forum in a far off corner of the Internet. But: Imagine you're
famous.* Audience of millions.* People love you and hate you
alike. You make a joke. It's misunderstood. How much harder and
longer will he have to explain himself? I only have to explain
myself to you.* Out of 7 billion people, I just have to explain
to you. Science educators like Bill Nye have a lot more people
they're responsible for and answer to a much larger audience.
Can you see what I mean?
