Words are magical things to some people. I remember in the 80s
in my church (Methodist), some of the older church ladies
decided that all of the lyrics to the Hymns should change to be
more inclusive. [that was the buzzword of the day - inclusive]

So they went ahead and pasted new lyrics in ALL the Hymnals for
all the songs and for a year, we just went along with the
  awkward rewordings.

  Then they had a meeting.

It turns out: NOBODY COMPLAINED ABOUT THE OLD WAY.

They just thought it should be done "just in case" somebody
  _might_ get offended.

The church ladies apologized for their presumption (a rare thing
in itself) and took upon themselves the task of removing the
rubber cemented "new lyrics" out of all 300 hymnals and rubbed
  off the excess rubber.

Mankind came back. They used the word "Peoplekind"

Two years later, a new batch of Hymnals came out, with more
inclusive lyrics, but NOT the dreadful ones they made up... but
  more professoinally done.

So, they were on the right track... just a little early.
