Motivation is an interesting thing; I was looking into
alternative forms of government (because it's an area I'm weak
  on; I'm usually researching psychology/sociology/brain stuff) -
  and a friend mentioned Sociocracy.

Sounded great! Looked into it, its Quaker roots... but I was
trying to find the flaw... find the flaw... find the flaw..
[because anytime something seems too good, it's hiding in what'
  *not* said]

Then I realized it: What about someone who isn't committed? What
do you do with them when they lack the conviction or become
disillusioned? Kick them out? Encourage compliance?

And then it hit me: Motivation. It's gotta come from the inside.

Ok - how do you encourage intrinsic motivation?

Is it possible to use extrinsic motivation to build intrinsic
  motivation?

What seems to be the case, although I'm not entirely sure, is
that it's *difficult* to use external motivation _if the
intrinsic motivation isn't there to start with_.

"Can't planet a watermelon in a desert" - that sort of thing.
All interesting nature/nurture stuff in this thing. [and of
course you *can* - you just have to modify the desert to fit the
  watermelon's needs
