Movie stars and musicians help build society - its likes,
dislikes, prejudices. They also provide a damper effect on a
large amount of people, which prevents them from being
dissatisfied with existence itself. This prevents civil war,
promotes peace.
So in that sense, movie stars and musicians serve a valuable
purpose.
That being said, their individual usefulness runs out quickly
and they must constantly be replaced.^
