^What did the Web look like before web browsers and http? Well,
  one thing they had is something called Gopher. It competed with
  http and lost. It looked like this: http://retro.naplesplus.us/

  I made it a few years ago to show some friends what Gopher
  looked and behaved like. The only difference is you were able to
  use arrow keys for navigation - and if you have the right
  terminal or computer setup, you could even view pictures on it.
  Boring by today's standards, but then again, so were the early
  browsers. Yet there's not a whole lot of difference between
  browsers in 2014 and browsers in 1994. 20 years - lots of stuff
  was added but its the same, flat feeling hypertext world. *sigh*
