INFORMATION ABOUT FANDRICH PIANOS TO BE ADDED TO FAQ:
  ---------------------------------------------------- (from Ken
Udut: [email protected]) [If you speak to Fandrich, or quote the
information from here, could you do me a big favor and mention
my name? Thanks! * --Ken] I spoke today (March 01, 1994) with
Barbara Fandrich, sister of Dell Fandrich, creator of the
Fandrich Piano. *She called me from Washington (I am in New
Jersey), and we spoke for over 20 minutes. She will be sending
me some literature on Fandrich the company and Fandrich the
piano shortly, as well as a videotape of a news report on
pianos, which included a very nice section on Fandrich pianos.
  ------------FANDRICH INFO------------ Address: ------- Delwich
Fandrich Fandrich Piano Company 3001 Murphy Street Hoquiam,
  Washington *98550 USA Telephone: --------- +1 206 553-8053 [I'm
pretty sure this is their home, as well as their office, so any
late night calls, expecting to get an answering machine, will
probably get you a very tired Fandrich family member!] [They are
the most upbeat of people! *I spoke to Dell last night, calling
for information on the piano, and Barbara called me back today
to verify address information, and to tell me that there was a
local person who bought Fandrich piano #56 and is willing to
showcase it (and I will tell the group what I find when I play
it).] More information: ---------------- The pianos are handmade
by approximately a dozen people. *While most high quality
uprights are made in 40 hours, the Fanrich piano is made in 200
hours! Dell Fandrich used to work for Baldwin, where he designed
a small grand. Balwin sells approximately 6 of his grand pianos
PER DAY! The Fanrich Piano has been compared, action and
soundwise, as better than most 6'4" pianos. More specific
  information on the piano: --------------------------------------
Renner Action (made in Germany) Keys are from England Plates are
finished at a grand piano factory - the ONLY upright piano in
the world to have plates finished in the manner of a grand
piano. Many parts of the piano come from the United States. The
only thing to come from Japan are the tuning pins. (In Barbara's
words: "Japan is known for making many great things...but...")
Price: $11,600, although they currently selling them through the
factory for $10,400 (02/01/94) Because of the amount of work
involved, when you order a Fandrich, you will receive in three
to four weeks. *Since Fandrich is located in a very small town,
shipping is extra, but it is only $225 to anywhere in the
Continental US from the factory. *Also, if you order from the
factory, there is no sales tax. Information gained from my one
and only copy of Keyboard Mag. (Dec. 1993) "Founded by Delwin
and Barb Fandrich and Ed Richards in August 1991, this operation
builds from 100 to 150 pianos a year. *At present, they build
only uprights, each one measuring 122cm tall and selling in the
$10,000 range. *Though the Fandrich upright boasts several
unusual designs, its most striking feature, literally and
metaphorically, is its action, a unique construction created by
Darrell *[did they mean Delwin? -Ken] *Fanrich to approximate
the feel of a grand piano action. The instrument has been touted
on National Public RAdio, CNN, and The Wall Street Journal...."
[If you decide to want a copy of the videotape of CNN showcasing
the Fandrich, send them $10 to offset the cost. *They are a
small company and, while they would probably send the videotape
for nothing, they could use all of the help they can get.
