I smelled human flesh burning twice in my life. Once faintly in
2001, on Sept 11th [I lived 7 miles by air from the World Trade
Center, and the smell of burnt concrete and flesh was
unmistakable.
But how did I know the smell of flesh in the first place?

Feb 20, 1991. A man set himself on fire "to protest the invasion
of Iraq" in Amherst, MA. I went to Hampshire College in Amherst
MA, and it happened just a couple of miles away.
The smell of HIS body? It was like a sickly sweet smell, and
there was a blue haze over the entire Hampshire College campus
for a day or two..
It was gross.
