The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

  As a fan of stop-motion, this film is a regular re-watch.  Not for
any technical marvels or particular love for the story but rather for
its balance.  The characters and sets are lovely, lighting competent,
pacing snappy, and sound design decent.  While enjoyable, the plot is
thin and not deserving of regular viewing on its own merit.  Nor is
the script particularly quotable.

  The Nightmare Before Christmas is a comfortable sum of its parts
that is just easy to pop on in the background comes the Christmas
season.  While glancing on the way through a room or when taking a
break from whatever you are actually doing, there will be some
amusement on the screen thanks to its lack of downtime.  While the
Holiday stresses build, a gentle reminder to appreciate what you have
and the life into which you fit is most welcome.  Most importantly, as
cloying Top 40 "hits" attempt to rape you into docile submission in a
particularly aggressive 24/7 assault which would make MK Ultra blush,
the slightly irreverent take on Christmas serves as a needed bite of
the thumb to our corporate overlords.

  Plus you get to watch a battery of anti-aircraft artillery -
complete with searchlights and raid sirens - shoot down a sleigh.
