If you volunteer at a local community club, like the Lyons, Rotary Club, Grange, etc.  you get a peek into politics.  It's a valuable experience learning how people get along, resolutions are made, parlimentary rule is followed, how people take on responsibility and a much much more.
However, one of the most powerful forces is the moment of the meeting.  At that moment everyone wants to get involved.  Volunteers agree, commitments are made, goals are set.  One day later all enthusiasm dissipates.  Absolutely.  It all evaporates and none of the commitments are met, volunteers fail to follow through and goals are forgotten.
The phone is a powerful force that can bring all the enthusiasm back.  The person with a list of phone numbers and who is willing to make the calls wields a powerful force.  With the phone call volunteers are empowered and their purpose renewed.  The person who makes the phone calls quickly becomes an important leader in the organization.
