Elektronika UKNC
================

Note: This post was written some time ago (it is actually older than my
recent UKNC-related posts [1] and [2]). I forgot to transmit it from my
writing device to the network-connected computer.

I have  got an  another Soviet PDP-11  compatible computer.  I already
have a Bk-0010.1 home computer and some handhelds/calculators.

But the Bk has as little as 16 kB  of RAM while the UKNC [3] has 64 kB
(actually 128 kB but half of RAM is used by utility processor). It has
the 8 MHz CPU which understands the most of PDP-11 instructions (it is
not a "clone" - it is a  Soviet design created to have instruction set
compatible with the PDP-11). It also has several I/O options including
a serial port and two cartridge slots.

It has two  (!) video outputs. They produce the  same picture, though.
But this feature can be useful for teaching or presentations. The UKNC
was a school  computer so it made sense. There  are also other options
including a  network card  and the external  floppy drive.  The floppy
drive (originally a dual 5.25"  monster was bundled with the "teacher"
computer) required  a special card which  is not common these  days. A
HDD driver card for an external hard disk existed, too.

If I am not mistaken some 300 000 such computers were built.

After all,  it seems to  be a decent  PDP-11 workstation for  use with
something  like  the RT-11  operating  system  (several Soviet  clones
existed).

Stay tuned for updates.
