Simplification. Or not?
=======================

Logout wrote  an article (in Czech)  about his tryings to  simplify his
computer/gadget setup.

I think that many people know the situation when
they  use  several devices  for  the  same  task  and when  they  carry
unnecessary burden of  gadgets.
There were  times when  it was normal  to an iPod,  an iPad,  an iPhone
and  at leas  one  notebook  (probably a  MacBook  pr  a PowerBook)  or
their  Android/Windows  equivalents. And  some  people  also carried  a
pocket calculator  because no  one of  these devices  is good  for fast
calculations.

I have periodically trying to simplify my setup too. There is a problem
that I sometimes buy a new device to replace several older ones. But at
the end I use  the old devised plus the new one because  it is not able
to fully replace them.

So what I'm using at the moment?

The desktop
-----------

The Raptor  Engineering Blackbird (a  POWER9 box) desktop at  home. But
also (much less frequently now) a SGI  O2 and the SGI  IRIS Indigo (I'm
writing this text on that Indigo, by the way.

And an another SGI IRIS Indigo in the weekend house.

Thus I use only one desktop in  weekend house but 2-3 machines at home.
This is not ideal.

The phone
---------

Since spring I have been using two  phones: the PUNKT MP01 for work and
city and the  Palm Centro for all other activities  (trips, cycling and
so).  Thus I  always carry  one phone  (if any).  I halted  to use  the
Tungsten W because the Centro is smaller and easier to replace. It also
supports Czech language better than the W.

The PDA
-------

Yes,  I still  use  a phone  AND  the PDA.  The  Palm III-class  device
(usually the  TRGpro). I also use  the PSION Organiser II  as a kitchen
computer and as an alarm clock. I usually carry none - the TRGpro is in
my office and serves as a calendar and address storage.

For a long time I used the Palm IIIx as a e-book reader and calendar at
home but I found recently that  batteries are flat so I probably didn't
used it for a while...

The tablet/ebook reader
-----------------------

Well, I  still have  a Kindle  (a 2013 model)  which I  use in  most of
cases, a  PocketBook (which  is usually  occupied by  my wife)  and the
nVidia Shield tablet (for games, it is used very infrequently).

The laptop/notebook
-------------------

Oh, I have a PowerBook G4 and the GPD Pocket. I have started to use the
GPD more frequently  as frequency of work meetings  started to increase
(I have learned  that I use the  poor GPD mostly at work  because it is
more practical than my official work  laptop). I use the PowerBook only
at  home and  at Saturdays  for some  light browsing.  I also  have the
Gemini PDA nut I  used it only twice this year when I  wanted to ride a
shared bycicle  (theh require an  Android or  an iOS application  to be
able lend the bike).

The calculator
--------------

I have several but actually I use none of them frequently.

The GPS device
--------------

I don't like to use  a phone or a PDA as a GPS  device. At the moment I
even do  not have a  GPS-equipped phone.  So I traditionally  have been
using a Garmin  device. At the moment  there are two: the  eTrex 30 for
bicycling (it's  perfect here but  this particular device  has problems
with the geocaching) and the eTrex  touch is my tourist, geocaching and
car navigation device.

The portable music player
-------------------------

I don't have one.  And I do not use any other  portable device for this
purpose now.

All other  devices that  I have  charged and prepared  to use  are just
hobby ones  and they  are not  used frequently (a  Z88, all  the Soviet
Elektronikas, the  BQ M10  tablet, some Thinkpads,  the Tungsten  W and
so).

It does  not seem  to be  the best  example of  digital simplification,
though...
