I'm trying to install a current OS on my half-repaired Ultra 20. As I
wrote yesterday I have replaced the original mainboard with the Tyan
Tomcat K8E (the Sun mainboard is a version of this thing).
Thee was an old nVidia card in the PCIe slot. It was dead so I have had
to use the integrated framebuffer for display output (it's VGA-only
which makes some problems with my screen but it should be fixable by
the proper xorg.conf). I tried to install my spare (modern) Radeon card
but simple solutions do not work here...
The installation process have became fun. I have two 320GB hard disks
here. One includes Ubuntu 12.04 and the second has the 10.04. There is
a CD-RW drive but it seems to be dead (I cannot open its door and the
OS shows strange messages related to it). It should be just a little
problem BUT THIS THING CANNOT BOOT FROM THE USB STICK! It can boot from
a floppy (if there would be one, of course) or from USB Zip drive.
Well, it is still possible to update 12.04 to 14.04. So I have been
going this way...
