PDF, annotations and ppc64le
============================

It is often recommended to use  the PDF format instead of Word/Pages or
other special  text file formats.  Modern PDF supports  annotations. So
people are sending PDF files with annotations to me. They expect that I
will use the Adobe  [1] Reader as they use. Yes,  this product works on
the Linux  (or at least worked  until recently, I don't  know and don't
care). But it never worked on the  PPC/POWER Linux (in the dark past it
might  worked  on  the  AIX,  thought). I  use  a  POWER9  system  (the
Fedora/ppc64le) so I cannot use it in any case.

What now? I have tried the Atril  [2] which is the default viewer on my
desktop. It does not  support them. The Atril is a  fork of the GNOME's
own Evince [3] thus I expect that Evince is no better.
Just  for  fun I  have  tried  the old  good  XPDF  (now it  is  called
XpdfReader). No luck.

Finally  I have  tried  the MuPDF  [4]. It's  a  very spartan  PDF/ePUB
viewer so  I didn't  expect that  it is able  to support  such advanced
functionality. But it does.  I only had to press the  "a" to enable the
"annotations editor". So there is another good reason to use the MuPDF.

The Fedora  (and Ubuntu,  too) for  the ppc64le  has the  MuPDF package
available.
