I use mastodon relatively often. On the O2 through the
Brutaldon.online, on the Blackbird (Fedora/PowerPC) I use the WWW
client.
At the beginning I followed a lot of people and used bot the Local and
Federated timelines often. But it wasn't sustainable. So I greatly
reduce the number of followed people (less or more a people who are
active in the gopherspace but also a few others).
In the WWW client I defined two new filers: a group called "Palm" where
I have only selected people (mostly there who are interested in
Palm or PowerPC computing) and a filter which show posts with tag
"#retrocomputing" (there is no pre-selection of people for this filer).
This setup works for me well. I even stopped to open the Local and the
Federated timelines at all.
