I have decided not to buy another unnecessary gadgets. But when Jynx
wrote about the Tungsten W and C then I was not able to resist. So I
ordered a cheap Tungsten W from Italy.
It is an interesting device: it is about size of the old good Palm III
is, it is just more rounded and slightly thicker. It can be used even
with screen backlight off. It has a SD slot. It has a keyboard. So its
main drawback is the build-in battery. Of course it uses different
connector than older palms through it is the same connector that other
old Tungstens use.
It has some wireless capability: it can connect via the GPRS to send a
receive e-mail and to surf the WEP pages. WWW possibly too, if only a
proper browser is installed. SMSs are possible but voice calls can
be done only with a wired headset. The device has no integrated
microphone. So its more a communicator than the so-called "smartphone".
It is interesting that all that stuff runs on a device with the
Motorola DragonBall CPU from the m68k family. There is no ARM. It uses
Palm OS 4.x - the last version for m68k palms. It is interesting that
it has faster CPU than for example the IIIx but its user interface is
noticeably slower. Its apps need more time to load, for example.
At the moment I only transferred the most essential stuff from the III
to this machine. I still didn't inserted the SIM card so I was not bale
to test its wireless capabilities. But it can be a great wireless
phlogging device because 2G networks are still available here. I should
try...
There is one particular issue: my device is an Italian version so the
OS is in Italian. I don't speak this language nor anything similar. So
some words are cryptic to me. Fortunately I know the Palm OS quite well
so I often know what menu item or function should be in certain
position and I can also identify program by their icons. BTW: Chiudi is
OK, Impegni is ToDo, Rubrica is AddresBook...
